Arabesque designs can primarily be found in works of brass, plaster, textile, tile, and wood. Generation after generation of dedicated artisans has perpetuated their crafts through these materials. Perhaps the most impressive works based on Arabesque design, or the ones that do it the most justice, are some of the more intricate Moorish mosaic tile patterns. If Italy is the home of much of Western arts and crafts than Morocco can certainly be regarded as its Arabic counterpart. What one notices instantly when looking at Arabesque mosaics are all the tiny geometrically shaped pieces and the complex geometric patterns those pieces are arranged in. These types of mosaics can only be described as the most colorful and mesmerizing displays of geometry ever, a mathematician’s wet dream. One can’t help but ask: What lies behind them, and what would compel people to go through the painstaking process of creating them?
